Sensitive ears? Read this before buying earrings

14 October 2026 · 4 min read

Itchy, weeping piercings after new earrings almost always mean one thing: nickel. It's in most cheap fashion jewellery, and sensitivity to it builds over time — you can wear junk for years and suddenly react.

The safe list is short: 316L stainless steel, titanium, niobium and solid gold above 14k. “Hypoallergenic” on a listing means nothing by itself — it's the material that matters. Every Voidcrafters earring is steel-based for exactly this reason.

Healing piercings are a different game: wear only implant-grade titanium or steel, downsize when swelling drops, and don't rotate the jewellery. Touch it less than you think you should.

The test before committing to a new pair: wear one earring for a full day while the old faithful stays in the other ear. Your lobe will vote clearly by night.
