How to spot fake “stainless steel” in 30 seconds
1 November 2026 · 3 min read
“Stainless steel” is the most lied-about phrase in fashion jewellery. Real 316L is weakly magnetic or non-magnetic — if a strong fridge magnet grabs your “steel” chain hard, it's plated iron or nickel alloy underneath.
Price is a lie detector. At Indian manufacturing costs, a chunky 316L ring cannot retail at ₹149. If the price makes no sense for the weight, you're buying plated alloy with a steel-coloured promise.
Listing red flags: no specific grade mentioned (“premium metal”, “high-quality alloy-steel”), stock photos only with no macro shots, and “tarnish-free” claims on pieces under ₹200.
Ask sellers one question: “316L or which grade?” An honest seller answers instantly. Evasion is the answer.
